The state government has appointed a special public prosecutor (SPP) in the Botad hooch tragedy that claimed at least 46 lives. Advocate Utpal Dave of Bhavnagar has been appointed SPP in the case, police sources said. “This would be of great help to us to file the charge sheet quickly and also in gathering evidence which could help get conviction in the case. We are trying our level best to file the charge sheet within a week,” said a senior police official privy to the investigation.

Cops to probe role of politician Meanwhile the cops have also launched an investigation to bring out details of a sleeping partner, who is supposed to be a senior politician in Amos. “Once Samir Patel, Rajit Choksi appear before the probe team we will try to find out evidence against the politician who is supposed to have invested in Amos warehouse from where the methyl alcohol was stolen by Jayesh alias Raju,”  said the source. On Wednesday evening DGP Ashish Bhatia also held a video conference with SPs, Range IGPs and Range DIGs and police commissioners of Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat and Rajkot. DGP Bhatia said that instructions have been passed to police across the state to check the illegal procurement of methyl alcohol by some of the licence holders. “Instructions have also been given to the police to take action under the Poison Act and Methyl Alcohol rule if any of the licence holders is found be in possession of more than legitimate quantity of methyl alcohol. Police have been instructed to crack down on bootleggers and book them under PASA and Externment and under section 93 of Prohibition Act,” Bhatia added.
